Universitas Padjadjaran’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences (Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, or FIB), originally named the Faculty of Letters (Fakultas Sastra), was founded on November 1, 1958 with the Decree of Yayasan Pembina Universitas Padjadjaran No. 6/FS/531 of October 1, 1958 regarding The Establishment of the Faculty of Letters. Two years later, the Faculty gained a stronger legal status with the decree of Minister of Education, Pedagogy, and Culture No. 66971/UU/60 of August 12th 1960, making the Faculty of Letters the 8th faculty to be established in Unpad.
The Faculty of Letters changed its name to the Faculty of Cultural Sciences in 2012, adapting to the growing complexity and intersectionality of the FIB’s instruction. This illustrated the qualities of FIB students and graduates in being able to actively communicate in languages they studied as well as comprehending linguistics, literature, history, and culture. The change allows FIB to develop a more interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary education and study of culture, utilizing a theoretical framework that is more critical, inclusive, and sensitive towards change.
FIB’s vision is to become a distinguished institution in conducting world-class higher education by 2026. The faculty commits to producing excellent human resources in the fields of language, literature, culture, and history who are adaptive towards change and intelligent in building an entrepreneurial spirit.
